Volvo Brake Repairs: Don't Take Chances With Your Brakes - Repair Them Now!

Brake repairs - critical? Of course! Your brakes keep your family safe. Brake repairs and parts for Volvos - trust Personalized Autohaus and Eric Benner our Certified Volvo Master technician to do quality repair on your Volvo with original OEM parts.

These tips will help you examine your Volvo brakes but if unsure just bring in your vehicle to our shop to be checked out:

Use Your Eyes & Ears to Inspect Your Volvo's Brakes

Visually inspect your brakes' condition at least every six months. Here are some things to look for:
Volvo Brake Rotors (discs) should be inspected all the way around the surface and on both sides for any concentric scoring (grooves) or obvious defects. If defects are found, replace your rotors immediately. Any rotor discoloration may be a sign of overheating and an inspection by our Certified Volvo Technician is needed.
Volvo Brake Pads will normally match rotor scoring but should also be inspected for uneven wear, breakage or cracking on the friction surface. Again, if defects are found, pads need to be replaced immediately. Many cars also have brake pad sensors to warn of pad wear. If your Volvo uses sensors, replace these at the same time as your pads.
Volvo Brake Drums (if equipped) should also be inspected on a regular basis. Check for the same types of flaws as noted above. The drums should not have excessive grooves or have a deep "trough" dug into them where the shoes ride.
Volvo Brake Shoes (if equipped) should be worn evenly and have no rivets protruding to the friction surface.
Volvo Additional Troubleshooting: When inspecting brakes, check calipers, wheel cylinders, hoses and fittings for any hydraulic fluid leakage.
Inspect the master cylinder, reservoir and proportioning valve assemblies as well. Replace or rebuild as required.
A "spongy" brake pedal or one that's gotten lower underfoot also needs looking into. It could be caused by sticking calipers, worn pads, low fluid or hydraulic system problems.
If you can't "pump them up", then you definitely have hydraulic problems that need work. If you always have to pump them up, at the very least your hydraulic fluid needs replacement.
To check brakes by sound, know how your brakes should sound and listen for out-of-the-ordinary noises.
Most cars have a slight brushing sound from the pads lightly touching the rotors. This is perfectly normal. Sounds to beware of include:
Squeaking may be caused by dust or dirt on the brakes, loose pads vibrating when applied or worn pads.
Rhythmic noise might mean you have a warped rotor. Instead of a solid squeaking noise, it pulsates. In extreme cases, the brake pedal will also pulsate underfoot.
Constant brake noise is never a good sound and any grinding noise spells real trouble!
Most importantly: As soon as any problem is noticed, get it repaired immediately. Delaying brake repairs is extremely dangerous.
Overstressed rotors and drums can break. Brakes may be too worn or damaged to stop your Volvo in an emergency.
Even if you manage to avoid physical harm, the longer you delay fixing brake problems, the more you increase the cost of doing so.
Badly worn, warped or overheated rotors can damage wheel bearings and the complete wheel hub assembly. These parts often cost as much or more than the brakes themselves.

Talk to our Certified Volvo Master Technician Eric Benner to evaluate your vehicle of its needs. Stop by our shop on 8645 Commerce Avenue, San Diego, CA 92121 and/or call us to make a service appointment today and get 15% Labor Discount (858) 586-7771.

Volvo year end maintenance

The biggest budget blunder you want to avoid at all costs is neglecting basic car maintenance.
It is not uncommon to see customers paying several thousands of dollars for a new engine after the original engine seized up due to the lack of engine oil; and causing it to fail prematurely. You don’t want this to happen to you.
Lack of routine maintenance affects all aspects of your vehicle and will surely lead to something big breaking down that will cost you big time, down the road. Going cheap in the short term often costs you more in the long run.
A well maintained vehicle can last for tens of thousands of miles. Proper maintenance is the best thing you can do for your investment.
At Personalized Autohaus we help you make small ongoing investments in regular service maintenance.

Your Volvo needs regular check-ups and maintenance. Regular oil changes at Personalized Autohaus will ensure that not only do you have plenty of oil in your car, but many will check your other fluid levels as well. As the car ages, we will also alert you to any Volvo parts you may need. These regular check-ups are recommended at every 3,000 miles.

In order to maintain safe and reliable transportation, it is also vital that you have your tires rotated and balanced every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. With all the safety features that a Volvo has it can't do anything to protect you should you have a blow out. By rotating your tires on a regular basis you will be ensuring that there is equal wear on all of the tires. Tires develop wear patterns over a certain period of time.

One of the most important regular service your Volvo needs is the brake maintenance.

The life span of your brake pads depends on your driving style, and the front pads usually wear out faster than the rear pads because they take the brunt for stopping the vehicle.
A new brake pad has 12mm (millimeters) of frictional material lining, and at 2mm you need new pads. The rule of thumb is that every mm counts for 1000 miles. When we rotate your tires we can tell you how many mm you have left on your brake pads.

Keep on top of your Volvo maintenance needs and ask our Certified Volvo Master Technician Eric Benner about any problems or issues you might experience at (858) 586-7771 or come visit our shop in the Miramar area of San Diego at  8645 Commerce Avenue www.personalizedautohaus.com
We offer a 15% Labor Discount for our new customers and a free oil filter and multipoint inspection with oil change.

Volvo Winter Maintenance Tips

If you are planning to take a trip up to the mountains this holiday season; Personalized Autohaus is offering all drivers some winter driving and car maintenance tips from experience.

Driving on snow and ice puts both the driver's abilities and the car's systems to the test. Volvo tests its cars to operate at in a typical Scandinavian winter designing cars to cope with a cold environment.

Checklist for winter Maintenance:

  1. New winter tires and rims
  2. New rear disk breaks and pads
  3. New oil with oil and air filters change
  4. New timing belt and two safety pulleys
  5. Collector gasket changed
  6. Rear bumper aerodynamics recalculated
  7. Spark-plug cables replace

Looking after the car
Your car needs to be in the best condition possible to cope with the extra strain of starting and working smoothly in extra cold conditions.

1. Make sure the engine has quality coolant that can cope with up to -31 ºF
degrees without freezing.

2. Try to keep the fuel tank as full as possible to prevent condensation in the tank and provide the maximum range and running time for the engine if stuck in snow.

3. Engine oil with lower viscosity (ie. thinner) makes cold starting easier and reduces fuel consumption. For winter use 5W/30 oil is recommended, particularly synthetic types.

4. Check the state of the battery more frequently as the heater fan and all the electrical items being used put a greater strain on the battery - and a poorly charged battery can freeze and become useless.

5. To prevent the windscreen washer fluid, hoses and nozzles from freezing, and to avoid damage to the washer pump, add washer solvents with plenty of anti-freeze.

6. Avoid using de-icing sprays on door locks as they can impair the locking mechanism. Volvo recommends a Teflon lock spray instead, available from Volvo dealers.

Looking after the driver
The driver needs to be alert and prepared to take extra care, especially when braking.

1. Don't always follow previous tracks in the snow as this compacted snow is likely to be more slippery. The fresh snow between the tracks will offer more resistance and stopping power.

2. Always brake gently and allow extra stopping distance on icy roads, and if the car skids, steer into the skid, not the other way. Snow by the side of the road may provide extra stopping power - and is always preferable to hitting oncoming traffic.

3. Air conditioning is not just for summer but equally important in winter as a dehumidifier to keep windows clear of condensation and give the driver better visibility.

4. The air quality inside the car is another important safety factor. Cold temperatures have a negative effect on combustion, so the surrounding air is likely to contain more impurities in winter, so keep the air conditioning on to help purify the air.

5. Volvo advises against the temptation of turning the car's heating up too high when driving in winter. Volvo's research shows that too high an interior temperature jeopardizes the driver's reaction times and increases the amount of errors. A constant, comfortable temperature inside the car is an important safety factor. It is unhealthy and disorientating to have an extreme difference in inside and outside temperature.
6. Don't forget automatic transmissions usually have a Winter setting to aid traction by starting in a higher gear than normal when pulling away in slippery conditions.

Bring in your Volvo to Personalized Autohaus for a Maintenance check before the holiday season to get your vehicle ready for an upcoming trip. Talk to our Certified Volvo Master Technician Eric Benner to evaluate your vehicle of its needs. Call us to make a service appointment today and get 15% Labor Discount (858) 586-7771.

Volvo Specialists Make Volvo Cars More Valuable

When it comes to safety in automobiles, the name Volvo is top in mind. In more than the 50 years of its existence, Volvo cars if anything else has led the way in new advancements in safety technology. They were the first to have seat belts, anti locking brakes, and air bags- from the driver, passenger and side air bags as well. Even in their engineering, the Volvo frames were designed to cushion most automobile impacts, hence the boxed up look. In fact, they owned up to their design-which drew criticisms from car critics as being boring. Hence the famous campaign slogan of Volvo: "Volvo- We're boxy but we're safe!"
Volvo has its loyal following of customers and is gaining ground especially with the SUV market as couples with new families tend to purchase Volvo automobiles based on their safety record. These cars are not expensive for its value but it has a premium price because of the engineering and design they put into every car. If I am not mistaken, Volvo was also the first automobile to have a black box that monitors the various systems of the car and has early warning signs if things need to be checked up on.
Because of such technology, servicing your Volvo should be done by a certified Volvo Specialists. Contact Personalized Autohaus in San Diego that can service your car if you happen to be in the area and need some repair work. You can trust Eric Benner, our Volvo Certified Master Technician at the shop.

Here is Sheldon Finn one of out trusted loyal Volvo customer’s testimonial:
“I had my Volvo service after noticing an oil check signal on the dash board. Having it serviced was very easy as I brought it into the Volvo specialist at Personalized Autohaus; he immediately hooked up his personal computer to the black box to check if the signals were correct. While doing this, he did some sample checks to my oil using a dipstick. When the blackbox diagnostic was finished, he told me that there were no differences in the blackbox and upon seeing the dipstick; he said that I was low in oil. Right there and then I had them do an oil change to the car. It didn't take too long, maybe an hour and a half including the time spent for doing the diagnostics. The bill I paid for was reasonable and I got on my way.”
That's the good thing with Volvo, as you get very good quality service with their specialists. It's a good investment to have, this Volvo car.

Volvo Car Problems - when your Volvo needs repair service

Volvos are known for their safety, reliability and longevity. With routine maintenance and repair, Volvos can top the 250,000 mile-mark easily. Despite longevity and a five-star safety rating by Consumer Reports, Volvos are not without their quirks. That is why it's a good idea to service your Volvo by a reputable Volvo repair shop and by a Certified Volvo Master Technician. Keep an eye out for the following car problems and contact your trusted repair shop like Personalized Autohaus right away:

Air Conditioning

Various air conditioning problems plague many Volvo models. In addition to non-functioning issues, there have been numerous complaints of malfunctioning cabin temperature sensors, where the air conditioner kicks on in cold weather. Owners have also had issues with air conditioner kicking on after the vehicle is off and at rest, draining the battery. Design flaws and assembly, electrical draw and pressurization have all been named as culprits of these problems.

Light Bulbs

Anyone who has ever owned a Volvo knows that headlight and brake light bulbs burn out frequently. Sometimes a tap on the lens will get them going again, but usually it's a trip to your trusted shop to replace for original factory parts. You can sometimes alleviate connection issues by applying petroleum jelly to the end of the bulb.

Dashboard Indicator Lights

There have been many consumer complaints regarding malfunctioning indicator lights. Most Volvos have a full dash of bells and whistles warning owners of everything from a door ajar to a dead light bulb, to low coolant or malfunctioning brakes. The "check engine" and "so engage without an actual problem with the system. Since there is no way of knowing if the indicator lights are working properly or not, this is best to be checked out by your trusted mechanic.

Engine

Any serious problems like car not starting, or not running right or engine noise needs immediate attention of your trusted Volvo Certified Master Technician!

Personalized Autohaus is your best alternative to the dealership!!
We have the expertise, the experience, the equipment and we use the right parts for your Volvo. We provide you with the same level of quality as the Volvo Dealerships can provide. Used Volvo - for drivers on a budget!

With core values of safety, environment, quality, and environment  a used Volvo might be the best solution of transportation needs for drivers on a budget.

Eric Benner Certified Volvo Master Technician always using authentic Volvo diagnostic tools, and Genuine factory parts

Used Volvo cars come equipped with all of the strength and savvy of new Volvo vehicles, offering powerful choices from the 1990s and early 2000s. Drivers who want the safety, environmental concern, and quality of a Volvo can opt to purchase one of these used vehicles.

Of course, purchasing a used Volvo isn't as easy as signing a piece of paper. Whether you're getting a loan or paying cash, you're probably worried that what you'll end up with is a big lemon. By getting the used Volvo checked out by an independent you'll be able to avoid getting an unwanted vehicle which is mechanically  not sound .

Before choosing which model of used Volvo you want, you should look into the different models to see which have the best reputations. You want to make sure to stay away from any models that might have a lot of complaints to the manufacturer, or a lot of recalls.

You should also make sure that the particular car you are looking at is in good condition. You should ask to see the maintenance records to make sure it was properly cared for, and make sure it will pass any required safety and emissions tests.

While the new Volvos of tomorrow might seem more attractive than the Volvos of yesterday, used Volvos are a sturdy and inexpensive answer for those who want a smooth ride for a small cost.

Taking care of your Volvo - by Personalized Autohaus

Taking the best care of your Volvo is important to how long it runs well. A Volvo is a dependable vehicle and by choosing only originally manufactured Volvo OEM parts, your car will outlast many others out on the roads.
One reason many people have troubles with certain makes and models of cars is the use of aftermarket parts on them. Many parts will not work well in engines that those parts were not specifically designed for. Make sure this is not a problem you will have to deal with by choosing a reputable Volvo parts dealer for parts and accessories.

Taking your vehicle in for regular maintenance is an important part of its high performance. Choose a mechanic that is trained and qualified to repair Volvo engines. Risking your car to someone that is not qualified is an expensive risk.

Selecting accessories for a car should also be done through your experts you can trust to give you parts and service worthy of the Volvo name. Be sure to add the accessories that will help to make your car more comfortable while also adding the ones that will help to protect your investment. Choose from decals, car covers, and interior accessories that will enhance the style and comfort.

The privilege of driving a Volvo is great, especially when that car is in top running condition. You can depend on a Volvo to never leave you stranded when you take good care of it with only the parts meant for it.

Maintaining Your Volvo Car

Volvo cars are tough, safe and reliable and repairs are rare. All you need to do is to ensure that you maintain your car well and take meticulous care of it at all times. Listen to the warnings its give, listen to the sounds it makes and adhere to your maintenance program at all times. Ensure that you use the maintenance kits provided by Volvo at all times and use genuine Volvo parts when you replace them in your car. You will find that the car is economical to maintain and repairs are few and far between!

Check your car's electrical system. It is important to keep them functional as they ensure the health and reliability of your car. The major components are the battery, the alternator, the wiring, fuses, switches and relays. The battery is vital for starting the engine or running the electrical instruments that come with your car.

Check the oil in your Volvo. If the oil light comes on in your Volvo it is time for action.Time for an oil change! It will be followed by a thumping and knocking sound. The car can stop dead in the middle of nowhere if every drop of oil is sucked dry. The engine will have to be trashed.

Check your brakes. If you are driving in rain put on the antilock brakes and stomp and steer. Test your car without antilock brakes, pump them and avoid wheel lock up.

A closer look at Volvos electric and plug-in hybrid car

Volvo’s green innovations have really been paid off. Volvo now offers several hybrid or electric vehicles to choose from.
Volvo's C30 electric is listed on most consumer's blogs as one of the top 10 of electric cars.

It looks like a regular Volvo C30 and it features the very same safety, comfort and space as the standard car. The difference is that it is powered solely by electricity, entirely without exhaust emissions, and one charge has a range of up to 150 kilometers (about 93  miles).
The Volvo C30 Electric project has attracted immense international attention.

The Volvo C30 Electric is equipped with three climate systems: one supplies the passengers with heating or cooling; one cools or warms the battery pack as necessary; and the electric motor and power electronics are water-cooled. The climate control in the passenger cabin features a bioethanol-powered heater, a solution chosen by Volvo to get heating without compromising the battery driving range, but the driver has the option to run the climate unit on electricity from the batteries.

Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid

Not sure whether you want to drive an all-electric car, a hybrid or a powerful sports car? Well, now you can do it all the with Volvo's new diesel plug-in hybrid, a new design based on their V60 estate.

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid, the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid, is an important part of Volvo Car Corporation's rapid transformation.
The diesel-electric car is also distinguished by aero-designed 17-inch wheels, integrated exhaust tailpipes and a number of bodywork features in glossy black.

The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid concept offers a push-button solution for finicky drivers. The driver chooses the driving mode from three buttons on the instrument panel:

In "pure" mode, the car is powered solely by its electric motor "as much as possible," said Volvo. In this mode, the car has a range of 35 miles.
The "hybrid" mode is the standard setting whenever the car is started. In this mode, the car has a range of 600 miles and has a combined average fuel economy of 50 mpg, according to the automaker.
In "power" model, the technology delivers "maximum possible power," said Volvo. The 280-horsepower gasoline engine is combined with a 70-hp electric motor. Volvo says the car sprints from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds in this mode.

Regular Maintenance

In addition to major mile-based maintenance and upkeep, it's important to carry out basic self-maintenance on a monthly basis. Monthly maintenance includes checking tire pressure during cold months, ensuring fluid levels are between the minimum and maximum markings and battery terminal inspection. The Volvo manual also recommends simple fix-ups each time you refuel your car, such as checking the engine oil level and wiping down your windshield, wipers, headlights and taillights.
Change your oil and oil filter every 7,500 miles. During oil changes, have your battery inspected, coolant levels checked and topped off and tire air pressure checked.
